process of a day

Everything seems easier in the morning, childlike almost. It’s not that hard to say yes, no, maybe so mumbling, still rubbing the sleep from your eyes. Everyone’s so soft, more fuzzed, blurred at the edges, vulnerable. Trudging down the stairs, or walking into the stairs, grasping around for words - or even banisters because two left feet - we walk around in drunken stupors reaching out for something, which more often than not, happens to be any sort of caffeine - tea, coffee, anything. Eagerly wrapping greedy fingers around a mug. Jokes seem much more appropriate to laugh at, tripping over yesterday’s mistakes. Somewhere between 7 am and noon, we wake up, slowly but surely.

Around 10:45 am, most of us are awake. The day’s activities quickly falling into place and timetables and work flying around. Somewhere, a newly ordered cup of coffee falls, somewhere else someone gets a good grade. We’re all on different pages of the same book.

It’s 12 o’clock. Right on the dot. The sun has reached its peak, it’s at its highest point, lunch. A sip of soda, a bite of a sandwich, maybe pasta but nothing more because time is time is time. It can’t be wasted. We all have somewhere to be.

3 in the afternoon. School’s all but let out, the trickle of high school students walk by, hands clutching their precious phones, eyes weary. Little kids gripping their parents’ hands, tired legs trudging home. College students either still inside or walking aimlessly. Adults trying to push through the last few hours of work. A job they don’t want to do.

It’s evening as dusk falls. Dinner, maybe? A pile of homework to finish, a long phone call to your parents to remind you that you are loved.

Night trickles by. The midnight moon, bright and blue streaks across the person sleeping beside you, your hands lazily intertwined. The endless day is stretched out behind you, a new one ready to burst at dawn.

But then you look at him. Or her. A slight smile, tousled hair, and eyes lighting up the sun. All is well to end up with you.
